NGI Research Fellowship – Fibre for the Future

Norges Geotekniske Institutt AS
Norge
Full time
2. juni 2025

Background and Context

The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) is looking for a motivated and skilled researcher to join our internal strategic research project Fibre for the Future (F2). Fibre Optic Sensing (FOS) technologies are rapidly emerging as powerful tools for geotechnical and environmental monitoring, enabling high-resolution measurements of strain, temperature, and vibration over long distances.

However, significant challenges remain in adapting these technologies to a wide range of geotechnical applications - particularly in understanding the interaction between materials and fibres, improving data interpretation, and developing robust analysis tools.

The Fibre for the Future project aims to position NGI at the forefront of FOS-based geotechnical monitoring by combining cutting-edge research in numerical modelling, machine learning, sensor development, and experimental methods. F2 is a multidisciplinary initiative with strong national and international collaboration.

Position Description

NGI is offering a temporary, full-time Researcher position for a period of two years. The successful candidate will join the Fibre for the Future (F2) project, dedicating 50% of their time to innovative research within the project, and the remaining 50% to other NGI research or consulting activities, tailored to your expertise and career goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and calibrate numerical models for fibre–soil interaction, using both traditional and mixed-dimensional approaches for dynamic and distributed sensing applications
  • Design and validate experiments based on laboratory data and physical modelling techniques
  • Implement data analysis workflows and machine learning tools for quality control, feature detection, and interpretation of FOS data
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications, open-source software, and the development of future research proposals

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate who brings a strong combination of technical expertise, research experience, and collaborative skills. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A PhD in a STEM discipline (e.g., geotechnical engineering, physics, computational mechanics, or a related field), along with experience in FOS hardware installation and/or FOS data interpretation - or other relevant experience (e.g., structural health monitoring)
  • Strong programming skills, preferably in one or more of the following: C, C++, Fortran, MATLAB, Python, or Julia
  • Advantageous: experience working with Linux/HPC environments and development tools such as Git and Docker
  • Advantageous: experience with geotechnical laboratory or field testing
  • Proficiency in data analytics and the interpretation of large datasets
  • A demonstrated interest in bridging research and practical engineering applications
  • A strong publication record in relevant fields
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral
  • An organized, proactive, and collaborative working style, with the ability to work independently when needed

We offer

  • A stimulating research environment with an interdisciplinary team of experts
  • Opportunities to shape emerging geotechnical sensing technologies with real-world impact
  • Competitive employment conditions including pension, insurance, welfare benefits, and generous holiday
  • Support for professional development and research leadership
  • A dynamic international workplace with colleagues from over 35 countries
  • From summer 2026, you’ll be working from our new, modern offices at Campus Ullevål.

Application Process

We will begin inviting selected candidates for interviews from 13 June, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Due to the summer holiday period in July, the recruitment process may extend into August if the position is not filled earlier. The preferred start date is September 2025, or as agreed.

Your application must include:

  • A cover letter outlining your motivation and relevant qualifications
  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Copies of diplomas and academic transcripts
  • Contact information for 2–3 references

All documents must be submitted in English.

We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment. As part of our recruitment process, please note that background checks may be conducted on relevant candidates, and this will only be done with the candidate’s consent.
